National Association of Military Moms and Spouses

There is a great chance that my family may move to Tampa next year.  It all sounds very exciting to me however I would love to hear from others who live there or have lived there.

I am wondering about good school systems, entertainment, and base housing.  Any input would be helpful.

Thanks.

Hi there,
We have been stationed at Macdill and I am actually from Tampa as well. It is a busy town that is for sure. The housing was in the process of being rebuilt when we were there eight years ago and I think (don't quote me) that it has been privatized. Many people that are stationed on base live out in an area called Brandon. So many in fact that a satellite clinic was opened. The schools in Brandon are newer and largely preferred to those around base. But there is also an elementary school on base unless that has closed. I love the Tampa Bay area for family activities. There is so much to do. There are a ton of beaches of course but there are also beautiful parks and rivers to explore. My favorite childhood one was Lettuce Lake Park in northeren Tampa. There is also Busch Gardens for the theme park experience. Tampa has a major airport and because it is a big city all of your major shops and stores as well. There are plenty of places to go for date night as well!
Okay so I have hopefully answered some of your questions. Feel free to ask more and I will do my best to answer them as well.
Vernessa - that is exciting! I have only visited Tampa, so I am not much help (sorry) but I just wanted to say 'Welcome home'. Was Florida on your 'dreamsheet'?

Susanna
FL was on our dream sheet...#7 on the list and the last on the list...funny how that works out! If I must leave Japan next year, then Tampa is a good place to go. Can't wait to get home.

Kathryn,
I was already excited about moving to Tampa but now I am more excited. You make it sound like a wonderful place to live. I am going to check out Brandon, FL to see if that is a possible place for us to live. I did hear that the housing was now privatized which was an interesting experience for us in CA. I have 1 year to figure things out so I will be doing a lot of research on the area. I hope its ok if I post a couple of questions to you every so often.

Thanks for your input.

Of course you can ask me whatever you would like. I still have family in the area and if I don't have the answer I will do my best to get a good answer for you. Talk to you soon,
leigh
