When did your son arrive at BMT? My son arrived on July 17th, I haven't heard anything from him other than the initial I have arrived safe call that first night. I got the postcard with his address, but I haven't gotten any phone calls or letters yet. that is driving me crazy, the not knowing. My son just finished wha tthey consider week 1. Hoping to hear from him soon!! The best advice I have is write him everyday, and just pray about it. I've heard from other parents that the first 2-3 weeks is the worst and after that the phone calls get better and longer as they adjust completely to BMT. I'm counting down the days til Sept. 13th when I can finally hug hum again!!

i never rcvd the info in mail that they were supposed to send but did get 2 phone calls already. my son left the same date they might even be together ironically. i swear it feels like im going through every step with him, and im not there, crazy, scarey. thanks for your responce. did you make reservations and flights yet?

Charlette...

That first phone call can be the WORST!!!!!! My son was actually crying, it was horrible. It gets better I promise!!!! My son swore in and left for BMT Jan 2011  and I still remember that call.  Just remember he is safe and fine! The next one will be a little better and they will keep getting better every week. Be super supportive.. LOTS of "you can do this" "I know its really hard right now but it will get better, not easier but better" "I am so proud of you" " You made the right choice". It gets better about week 3 that is when you will hear more of a difference.  By week 6 and 7  it will be great looking toward Graduation.  Write to him EVERY chance you get! they live for mail.  BMT is a roller coaster ride that goes on for 8.5 weeks and because I have already ridden it I can promise you that when you see your son go by during the Airmens run, get his Coin at the Coin Ceremony, tap him out and get that first hug and then see him march by at the Grad parade EVERY climb, dip, twist, turn and gut wrenching drop aka that 1st call will be worth it!!!!! Hang in there and welcome WingMom!

I remember my husbands first call home, it was horrible for both of us. So unsure if we had chosen the right path or not. It's been three years now and the only thing I can say is it gets easier. Hang in there.

Yes graduation date is the same for all arriving to BMT on July 17th, It's Sept. 13th is their irman run and coin seremony, Friday the 14th is theactual graduation and they get to go off base for the day, Sat. the 15th they get to go off base for the day. We booked a room at LaQuinta on Military Dr. it's a 1/4 mile from the base. If you call the 800 number for LaQuinta and tell them you are going for AF graduation they will ive you an 800 to call that will gt you the special Family and Friends rate at the hotel. we got it for $79 a night when usually $99 a night weeknights and$119 a night on weekends. We're arriving Thursday afternoon, so we'll miss the run but it's the earliest we can get there.Thursday from 2pm-7pm they have on base visitation so you can spend time on base with your airman. I got a graduation packet in the mail Monday with hotel listings and schedule for graduation ceremonies.

I got the phone call Sunday night also, after saying hello, my so just said "mama" and started crying. It too ripped out my heart, I wanted to get in the car and drive all night to Lackland to hug my baby. By the end of the call he was better. Said he was just tired, stressed and lonely. Mine is what they call a battlefield airman trainee, he is under a PJ contract, which is special forces, so he's housed with other special forces guys. He's in 320th TRS/ FLT 578 in dorm B-8. I talked to his recruiter today and other moms whose kids have been thru BMT, they all said the first phone call with guys is emotional and hard, but it will get better and they get their bearings. I pray this Sundays call will be better.

Oh Melanie

OMGoodness, I so remember this like it was yesterday, and it has been 7 years since that first phone call from BMT.  Yep so ripped my heart out too, he cried, and I was trying not to let him hear the fear and anxiety in mine, trying to calm him down.  After the phone call, I sobbed!  Second phone call, the next week, he talked to his sisters, we all sobbed worrying for his safety and well being.  Third phone call after week three he was better, but still wanted to come home.  By week four, he told me he had made the best decision of his life, and was so glad he was there.  It will and does get better.  My son had never been away from home for more than a night or two,  and I was a single mom with three kids at the time and we were all each other had....so when he left and was sobbing on the phone, it about killed me.  But he has turned into a stellar man, soldier, husband and father, and I could not be prouder of him!  Just know it will get better, and you will be so very proud...and so will he! Much love and many prayers to you Wing Mom!

Marti

I am now at the end of week 3!!! Last sunday's phone call was so much better than the first. No tears on his part and only on mine after we hung up. that 15 min flies by. But this week he was finally able to start writing and I've gotten 3 letters. That has helped tremendously. Plus he's written other family and his GF and we all call and share his letters as he writes something different to all of us.
