National Association of Military Moms and Spouses

My son, Chase, left yesterday for Lackland.  He called to let us know he arrived safely.  Then we got the address phone call last night.  I was expecting it in a couple of days.  His voice sounded so strong that it really encouraged me...However, this is only the first night.  I guess I will see how he sounds when he calls back.

After the address call when should I expect to get another phone call?

By the way, thank you for this website.  It is a place I can go and everyone understands what I am feeling and what Chase must be feeling.

Welcome Jeanie..

You should hopefully get a call every week usually on Sundays but it changes at the drop of a hat.... become one with your cell phone LOL.

WARNING:

That first phone call can be the WORST!!!!!! My son was actually crying, it was horrible. It gets better I promise!!!! My son swore in and left for BMT Jan 2011  and I still remember that call.  Just remember he is safe and fine! The next one will be a little better and they will keep getting better every week. Be super supportive.. LOTS of "you can do this" "I know its really hard right now but it will get better, not easier but better" "I am so proud of you" " You made the right choice". It gets better about week 3 that is when you will hear more of a difference.  By week 6 and 7  it will be great looking toward Graduation.  Write to him EVERY chance you get! they live for mail.  BMT is a roller coaster ride that goes on for 8.5 weeks and because I have already ridden it I can promise you that when you see your son go by during the Airmens run, get his Coin at the Coin Ceremony, tap him out and get that first hug and then see him march by at the Grad parade EVERY climb, dip, twist, turn and gut wrenching drop aka that 1st call will be worth it!!!!! Hang in there and welcome WingMom!

Jennifer,

This feeling is like not other emotion or feeling I have ever had in my ife.  Thank you so much for the insight and encouraging words.  I know that being on this site will make this journey easier.

I hope he does call on Sunday.  Hearing his voice made me feel a lot better.  I will remember what you said about the "You can do this" "Stay Strong" comments.  I know he is going to need that.  Thank you again.

It's week zero for my daughter, Lauren.  She left on 7/10.  Heard from her at 1:30am on 7/11 to give us her address, but haven't heard from her since.  If you are on Facebook, like the Basic Military Training group.  It's helpful as well!

I heard from Chase yesterday about 3:45pm.  He had 30 minutes to talk.  I asked about his TI and he said that he told them tht if you don't screw up he will not yell at you.  He said that he doesn't yell just to be yelling.  Sounds like he lucked out.  Chase sounded good and was nervouse abuot week 1.  This is when the physcial conditioning starts and for discipline they can make them do push-ups.  He said last week was about the "details"...making the bed, getting their lockers ready for inspection, getting their ADUs, getting shots and hair cuts.  He did't sound intimidated or stressed at all.  I am very encouraged.  However, the next time I hear from him may be a different story...Can't wait!

My son just left MEPS and is waiting to find out what time he gets on a bus to take him to the plane for Lackland. His graduation date is set for September 14th. The emotions me and my husband are going through are so varied. Only other parents going through this, could understand. We have no idea what time he is due to arrive at Lackland and when we might get the phone call and when he will be officially considered "in BMT". Hoping to meet other parents whseo son may be with ours and communicate with each other through these next 9 weeks.

My son also just left for BMT on Tuesday. I got the initial phone call about 11pm Tuesday night, unfortunately he did not have an address to give at that time. I emailed the Reception Center and got his address last night. From my understanding from my son's recruiter and also from a friend whose son just graduated BMT in March, you most likely will not receive another phone call until Sunday at the end of week 1, which starts today for those whose kids left on the 17th of July. But it is a privilege, so no promises. I know my friend's son got one that week for 15 min, and each week after they would earn a little more time during the once a week call. I think by week 6 they had an hour on Sunday to make phone calls.

i also did some digging and calling it took me forever but my phone call was on a wednsday and it was about 10 minutes tops. i think his group is having a hard time and maybe a tuff drill sargent. still never recvd a letter or post card but got the address from the desk at tx base. hope its right cuz ive been writting everyday lol. this is like a nightmare for me, i just need to know grad info so i can book rooms and flights

Charlotte, what trs/flt is your son in?

My son arrived at Lackland on July 17th, aftetr the initial phone call telling us he arrived safely we did not get another phone call until the end of week 1, so it is almost 2 weeks before you get a "real" phone call. They only get 15 min, and that's if he only calls you. The best advice I have is be prepared, the first calls is usually very emtional for both of you. We got next call at end of week 2, this one was also 15 min but much better emtionally. Calls usually happen on sunday , but can come at any time any day. And 15 min sounds like a nice conversation time, but it's amazing how slowly a minute creeps by while waiting for th ephone to ring and once it does that 15 min flies by. If you have questions for your AB make a list keep it by you cause when they call everything goes out of your mind except telling them you love them and miss them and asking how are they. LOL I make a list all week long of questions I've thought of or things we need to get answers for to handle bills for our AB and that way as we talk I can ask and write the answers or cross them off my list.

Angela, Chase had a kidney stone and passed it.  However, they sent him home. He got home Friday night.  He goes to the Air National Guard base Tuesday and the base doctors will evaluate him.  Pray that they send him back.  Thanks.

Welcome, for me this was the hardest part, it was the first time my son was away from home and me. Add to that not even being able to talk to him when I wanted to. But now six years later it is okay. I still don't get to talk to him when I want because he doesn't always answer his phone haha. Please remember that you have a group of us that are here for you and we understand the tears!

My son said the most important thing for him was that we were positive and encouraging every time we talked to him. We always told me that he could do it that we are proud of him and that no matter where he is or what he is doing he is never alone.

Janice, I don't know if you have heard of wingmoms, but it is a group that has a link on facebook, they have so much valuable information on there plus, you can search for your sons group and talk to more parents and learn more about graduation, flights etc.  https://www.facebook.com/AFWingMoms?ref=ts  I think this would be a great help to you.  It has been to me.
