Hello everyone!  I'm new to NAMMAS and only just now found out about it!  My husband and I have been married since October and he deployed with the MD National Guard in late February to Iraq.  I moved to Florida to be with my family during his deployment.   Not to long after getting settled in, I decied to go to the doc for a normal checkup and bloodwork, only to find out I was 17 weeks pregnant!  Talk about a total shock.  I was terrified to tell my husband, but after giving him the news he and his entire family are excited!  I'm now 24 weeks and he will be able to come home around due date time during his R&R and see his little girl!

After 6 years of marriage and 3.5 years of  struggling with 'unexplained' infertility, we are expecting our first baby in July. I'm almost 28 weeks along and we are having a little boy :-). It's been awhile since I've been on the NAMMAS website. I'm so glad to see a group like this on here.

My husband got to deliver our son, in the hospital with the midwife present, he thought it was the best experience. They put him right up on me after, but I didn't care about all the stuff on him....I figure it came out of me and he lived in it for almost a year, it wasn't a problem for me. I do understand that some don't like it tho. My hubby can't wait to deliver our next baby, it helped make him feel like he was an important part of the birth of our son.

I have had three hospital births and three epidurals. I have had some really bad experiences and some ok ones, but I've never felt like a have a fantastic birth experience. This time around I am having a water birth at a birth center. I am really hoping for a very peaceful and joyous experience. I'll let you all know how it goes!

Ok ladies, just perusing one of my fave birthing sites and found this video. Very graphic! But interesting...what are your thoughts...on birthing centers, standing births or other kinds, and this video?!

Confession: I've never let the docs put my babies on me right after birth. Kinda gross to me, but that's just me. What about you??

There are many options available for cloth diapers. These include pre-folds, fitted diapers, pocket diapers, and all-in-ones. Pre-folds and fitted diapers require a cover to prevent leaks, all-in-ones and pocket diapers do not.

Pre-folds are the cheapest and easiest to wash/dry. You need about 2 dozen to go 2-3 days between washes. Pre-folds are available online at www.clothdiaper.com. (I usually get the factory seconds for about $15/dozen) I used pre-folds inside a gDiaper cover for 2 years and really liked this method. (gDiapers are hybrid diapers available at many health food stores like whole foods as well as on ebay). The downside to gDiapers is that the velcro wears out and you have to replace your covers about once a year. However, the really nice thing about them is that they are more slim fitting than other covers and aren't as bulky under clothing. You would need about 4-6 gDiapers. I currently use pre-folds secured with a snappi (a modern alternative to old fashioned diaper pins) and a wool cover. This allows a ton of air flow and keeps my son really cool in the summer/warm in the winter. Wool covers require very little care. The don't need to be laundered very often, just hand washed and lanolized about once a month and just rinsed if they get pooped on in between. You need about 3-4 covers. There are other covers available made from synthetic material, but I never really cared for those.

Fitted diapers are wonderful, but more expensive and take longer to wash/dry. They go on like a disposable and require a cover. (I use my wool covers over them as well.) Because of the snug fit I really like them for newborns. They will run between $5-$25/diaper.

All-in-ones are like fitted diapers that don't need a cover. They are wonderful for dad! Diaper changes are just like with a disposable. (I have 5 of these for dad to use) I have found that these have less absorbency than the others, but you can put a doubler inside for a little extra protection. They are about the same price as fitted diapers.

Pocket diapers are basically all-in-ones with removable soaker for quicker drying and ease in washing. I've never used them, so I cannot give you very much info. My sister didn't like them because you have to pull out the poopy insert to wash and she found it messy and gross. I have heard of women that swore by pocket diapers and won't use anything else.

I guess you may have to try as few types and see what works best for your baby and you! Good Luck!
