National Association of Military Moms and Spouses

Hello my fellow AF wives!

My husband and I have received (for the 3rd time) orders to the RAF Lakenheath, UK. I am hoping that this time we get medically cleared this to go. But I am just curious if there are any other wives stationed over there that can provide some guidance. We are getting close and I want to know the stuff the don't post on websites. The "if I could do it all again, I wouldn't have done this adivse". Our final out is July 15th, and we are going to be actually arriving in the UK the 2nd week in August.
I am at a little bit of an advantage as my Mom, sister, and the rest of my mothers family live in th UK. My mother and her family are UK citizens. I have been a civilan/tourist over there but not an Airmans wife.
Anyway thanks for any advice.

Congratulations on your assignment! Make sure you have a good amount of money saved up before headed over to the UK you will need it for deposits if you decide to live on the economy and let (rent) a house. There are a number of deposits that will be needed for utilities when you move into a house. You will need to open a pounds account at Community Bank on RAF Lakenheath before doing anything else when you get there. A pounds or sterling account will be the account that you use to pay your bills every month. Alot of landlords require direct deposit for their monthly payments.

The second thing you need to do is go get a cell phone immediately. You can buy a pay as you go phone that is a month by month phone with no contract. We used Vodaphone when we first arrived because they were the only company selling at the BX at the time. Later we switched to T-mobile and received wonderful service. If you have a sponsor talk with them about wh they use.

The biggest thing is to just try and relax and take things with stride when you get there. There is so much information out on the Internet about being stationed overseas and what to expect so you should be able to find all of the information you need and info you don't need:). My husband and I were stationed at RAF Mildenhall, just 10 minutes from RAF Lakenheath, from 2004-2008 and enjoyed our time there.

Good luck with your move!
Wait you leaving!!! I just found out you were at MH!!!
