National Association of Military Moms and Spouses

Ok ladies, I need all the advice I can get....  My husband will be finishing up tech school in about six weeks and we just found out our assignment.  We are going to Laughlin AFB, I know that's the middle of nowhere, but I'm actually pretty excited!  So here's all the questions that are going through my mind;

  • How/when can I apply for housing or does my husband have to do all that since it's our first assignment?
  • Is anyone else on here stationed out at Laughlin?
  • Do we have to set up some type of moving plan?
Mostly I am worried about housing, we really want base housing, especially because it's on the border! Any advice you all have I would be more than happy to hear, so bring it on!

Have you contacted their Base Housing Office? They will be able to answer all those questions. Normally, the Air Force will move you there; which means they will come to your house, pack all your belongings for you; deliver your household goods and even unpack, if you want. The BH Office will be able to tell you if they have a waiting list to move on base and can send you a listing of off base houses and apartments if that is what you need to do. You will get a housing allowance in your husband's paycheck if you need to move off base. Hope that helps. I can try to look up the phone number of the base housing office, if you don't have it. Good luck and welcome to the USAF.

The ladies already pretty much answered your questions :). Besides saying welcome to the USAF, your husband should be assigned a "sponsor" that will help you answer any questions on the base. Also be sure to contact their Airmen & Readiness Center as they can send you a packet of information about the base and the surroundings. Military One Source is also a good source to have as well : www.militaryonesource.com . Most importantly don't be afraid to ask questions and best wishes to you!
My husband is stationed at Laughlin, so naturally I'm here with him. :) This is our first assignment too. My husband applied for housing in May of 09 and we got approved in Sept 09. There was a lot of people here at the time so it took a while. Now I don't think there are as many people here, so you shouldn't have a problem getting housing.
Since there are so many students here, you will not be assigned a sponser like Jennifer said. They don't do that here. I think most bases you are supposed to get one though.
We didn't know anything about moving either and wish we had someone to tell us before we moved. Here are your options:
1.) You can have the Air Force move everything for you and not worry about a thing.
2.) You can do a partial Dity, which means you can move some things in your car and the Air Force can move the rest of the things. (I wish we knew about this one because we moved a ton of stuff in our cars with us that we never got reimbursed for.) They weigh your car when you get on base, then you unload everything and go back and weigh it without everything and they will pay you for the pounds based on how far you go.
3.) You can do a full dity and move yourself and get reimbursed for everything.

When you get here, your husband can also get extra money for moving you. There's an extra spouses pay he can get if you move with him. I'll have to ask my husband what it was called.
I can get you on the e-mail list so you get all the student spouses events on base. We do an event about once a month. That was really helpful for me in meeting people but I didn't know about it until 5 mos after I got here.
If you have any other questions, you can contact me and I'll try and get them answered for you.
