National Association of Military Moms and Spouses

So this summer has been the first time my husband and I have been separated for an extended period of time since we met and it has been a lot harder than me than I expected.  There were times when I was really in a slump.  So I wanted to be able to do something that would help get me out of the slump and make me feel better.  So I made a goal that I would try and do at least one act of service for someone else a day until the end of the year.  Even though my husband is coming home soon, I still want to continue that.  But I'm running out of ideas and I don't want to keep doing the same thing over and over again.  Anybody have any fun, creative ideas for service?

Also, one of my ideas was to write a thank you card and send it to a unit that is currently deployed but I have no idea how to go about finding where to send it to.  Any ideas?

Thanks!

Thanks Sylvia! I'll look into those ideas. And I will definitely come to you when I need to talk to someone. Thanks! I'm pretty independent most of the time and I didn't think that being separated would be a big deal. I didn't realize that I would need to rely on the support of others so much. But when I was looking for it, I didn't know where I could find it. I wish I had found this page sooner. But now I know. Thanks!
I volunteered with the Special Olympics and had the experience of a lifetime! Watching the young children with Down Syndrome and other disabilities throw their arms into the air in celebration of coming in last place for the race was one of the most heart-warming moments of my life! It definitely gave me "new perspective" on what friendly athletic competitions should be about!

Another act of service...reach out to a local school teacher. Help her decorate her room for a new season, grade papers, read a book to the kids during storytime -- she will be SO GRATEFUL!!!

So glad that the deployment is almost over for you, Allison! Feel free to reach out to me as well....I've been through 4 with another one on the horizon next summer. I can't say it gets easier, however, you become acclimated to how life functions during deployment. I'm here if you need anything...
Thanks! Those are some great ideas Megan! I live in a college town and I know they do Special Olympics at the university every year. I'll look into that!

He gets home next Saturday. I'm so excited!

WAHOOOOOOOOO!!!!! That is so exciting! There is nothing better...

What a wonderful thing to do!!  If there is a VA anywhere near, they always need and want volunteers.  I know you can also mail letters to Walter Reed Hospital in care of "any soldier"  There is also Soldiers angels, Operation homefront, and many other charities and service organizations that are military related that you could get involved with...check on line for the military groups.......these and others in your state or by your base.  You will be surprised at how many things there are to do.  We have jusat National Guard here in Michigan, no active military bases anymore, but I have become involved with Operation Homefront, just got directed to Soldiers Angels, A Military Support group in my area, and Blue Star Mother's of America.....all volunteer service organizations designed to help members of the military and their families.  Or start a group of your own on base, or for base wives!!  Get online and research those in your area.  Hope this helps!
