Sorry it took forever for me to respond, but I am originally from NY so I know a lot of the area up here. As far as being married my husband and I got married July '10 so I know what you mean about being new to the army. Honestly I dont do a lot around here, their isnt much in the winter time for me to do with my little girl, unless its driving two hours to go see family. Summer time there is a lot to do around here, and sometimes a nice little drive to Six Flags Darien Lake is a lot of fun. For jobs, there isnt any lol. Not even on post really. Have you tried at the Salmon Run Mall in Watertown?

Abigail,
if you want to explore more resources for spouses and you have Facebook, check Army Wives Network, Blue Star Families, Army Wife 101, Her War Her Voice. You can find them all in Internet too, it's just more comfortable in FB.

Blue Star Family Fort Drum Chapter was looking volunteers for an event last week, but you still can get in touch with them:
Heidilandre@yahoo.com

Brand new wives often fall through the cracks because they don't know where to find resources. Check those pages. FRG should start giving you guys some pre-deployment info. If you don't hear from them very soon, let your husband ask the unit. The FRG might not know that you exist (happened to me once before)

My husband is infantry and already 10 years in the army. Your hubbie will stay mostly behind the wire, but still the deployment won't be easy time for you. My husband once was in the Republic of Georgia for 10 months and it wasn't a combat zone. Yet, the separation sucks and it's not like he's for a year in California :)

How did you find the realtor in Watertown. How long it took you to find a place? Any hints, haha?

OK, if you don't find cool people to hang out with in Watertown, when we PCS in December we can drink coffee downtown :)

Thanks for the quick answer. I've never lived on the post, always off post. But I heard that you can't find a decent apartment for rent in Watertown. So it might be the case that for the first time in my almost 3 1/2 years as an Army spouse we'll live on the post....
Are you living off/on post? We don't have children yet, so I would rather prefer to live in the town, walk to the park, to the coffee shop etc. ;)
My in-laws are from UpState NY, so I am kind of prepared for the winter....

Since this is your first deployment, it's probably better for you to order this audio book
http://www.militaryonesource.com/MOS/FindInformation/Category/Topic/Issue/Material.aspx?MaterialTypeID=0&MaterialID=13949

It's called "These Boots: A spouse’s guide to stepping up and standing tall during deployment" and you can get it for free from Military One Source. I think it's very helpful.

The best advise is to find friends, as many as you can, to help you during the deployment. I know it sounds almost impossible when you're brand new at the duty station... I found friends through my yoga studio, community events, my husband's unit. My best advise is not to judge people too fast. It's never going to be like in your hometown but you still can find some decent people. Yep, I've learned it in a hard way after spending many lonely days ;)
