My only child has been in the DEP program since Oct 2011. He entered this program in hopes of landing a guaranteed job contract. Each month he reports but each month the jobs he selected are not available to the dep'ers. So now his recuriter said he needs to go in as open general because his name was chosen in the computer? Now I have been trying to stay out of the decision making(he is an adult now) but Im having a hard time doing this. He brought home yesterday a contract to b signed going in as open general. I can tell he is struggling with it but he said he has no choice but to sign and go in. He has until Feb, 1st to respond back to recruiter.
Has anyone here or no of someone who entered BMT as open. Without a guaranteed job? I have turned to the internet reviewed videos and read chats and about 80% say dont go in with out a job. My child has also read, talked to recuriter numerous times and I guess the not knowing is making him hesitate. He is very nervous.
Is there anyone else here that has either gone through this with there kid or know any other groups that could help me? By the way this site rocks! So glad to have found it....................................

Comment by Kathaleen Berhiet on February 1, 2012 at 12:41pm I'm sorry, I know that your son is supposed to give his answer today. But maybe this will help? I know a lot of people that go to BMT with Open/General on their contract. It basically just means that once he finishes Basic, he will be trained in whatever field they are short. Good news, if he can be a little flexible, he's able to cross train into the field he wants are 4-6 years, depending on the length of the contract he signs. My husband didn't get his first choice at AFSC. So they looked at his strengths and put him in one where they can utilize it. In 2016 (he signed a 6 year contract), he can cross train into that job he originally wanted. Make sense? Again, I'm sure this is too late to help but I wanted to try anyway. :-) Tell your son Good Luck!
